LANGEBERG LIBRARIES: YOUTH MONTH & SCHOOL HOLIDAYS ACTIVITIES 10 JUNE – 05 JULY 2024

There are many exciting activities taking place at our local libraries this school holiday, ranging from sports activities to life skills programmes. Children will be provided with fun educational activities that develop their skills and interests.

As parents, you can play a key role in building the reading and writing skills of your children by encouraging them to read during the school holidays and after school hours. Most local libraries stock the latest and most sought-after books, DVDs and CDs. Check in at your local library and connect with the world.

(This activity is to empower the Next Generation - Youth Day in South Africa. Youth Day in South Africa is an important day, where young people in Africa pay homage to and celebrate the student uprising of 1976 in Soweto. It is a day of reflection, power, and growth of the nation's youth.)

2. Youth Games

(This activity improves children's abilities to plan, organize, get along with others and regulate emotions. In addition, play helps with language, math and social skills, and even helps children cope with stress.)

3. Karaoke for youth

(Fun Activity to improve reading & learning opportunity. Singing helps children learn to recognise sounds, develop their sense of rhythm and rhyme and develop pattern awareness. Karaoke has lots of animated videos with words and music for popular children's songs.

4. Father’s Day Cards (Art & Crafts)

This activity is to celebrate father's & this Father’s Day we want to encourage library users to celebrate the men in their lives. For children, it is a day to show appreciation for their fathers and father-figures.

Giving gifts to their loved ones promotes children's social-emotional development and helps them practice their social skills.

5. Youth Day Activities & information session

Youth Day is a day to recognise the role which the youth of South Africa played in the eventual liberation of the country from the Apartheid regime. We at Happy Valley library plan to have a fun filled day where our youth can learn and make a change in their lives. We need to liberate ourselves from our circumstances and take up opportunities that are available to us and build a better future for ourselves. The biggest lesson young people of today should learn from those in 1976 is the courage to fight for change.
