Solid Waste Management is made up of the following services:
Cleansing:
We ensure general cleanliness in the streets and public spaces of Langeberg. We also oversee the removal of animal carcasses on public land and roads, as well as the cleaning and collection of refuse in informal settlements.
Other tasks include:
- Provision and servicing of street litter bins.
- Litter picking and clearing of illegal dumping.
- Cleaning hawker areas.
- Overseeing and/or facilitating various cleaning programmes.
Refuse collection:
We ensure that refuse bags and 240ℓ wheelie bins are collected from the curb side of formal properties on the scheduled refuse removal day each week. Place your bin on the pavement infront of your property before 07:45 on the scheduled refuse collection days. Placing your bin out the day before can result in a fine.
Select your town of residence to see the daily refuse collection schedule:
- Ashton Waste Removal Schedule
- Bonnievale Waste Removal Schedule
- McGregor Waste Removal Schedule
- Montagu Waste Removal Schedule
- Robertson Waste Removal Schedule
We issue 240ℓ wheelie bins to property owners upon receipt of an application.
Other services include:
- Ad hoc removal of garden refuse.
- Collection of recycling in all areas.
- Provision of refuse removal services at events.
Waste disposal activities:
The Solid Waste Management department ensure that waste is managed and disposed of in a legally compliant, responsible, and environmentally acceptable manner. The services provided include general disposal and waste transfer, and drop-off facilities for general and green waste and builders’ rubble.
These services include waste reduction:
- By chipping green waste for composting.
- Handling and processing of recyclable waste in material recovery facility.
- The transfer of waste form transfer stations to Waste disposal facilities and Compost facility.
Drop-off and transfer stations:
We provide facilities for use by residents where they can drop off any non-hazardous refuse that cannot be managed via the scheduled refuse removal service each week. Drop-off sites accept household waste, garden refuse, recycling, and garage waste. Vehicles with a maximum carrying capacity of 2m³ are allowed to enter the facilities once per day.

How to recycle:
The Recycling at Source Project is being gradually introduced to all residential areas in the Langeberg area. In the past the cooperation of the community has contributed to our success in the Provincial Cleanest Town Competition during 2006, 2007 and 2008 and the National cleanest town in 2009. By becoming involved with the Recycling at Source Project, you will help us to continue with the great success.
STEP 1 - Put clean recyclable items into a clear bag that is provided to households and additionally available on request at all Solid Waste Management Offices.
STEP 2 - Once full, place the clear bag on your pavement on refuse collection days. Do not place your recycle bag inside the wheelie bin.
STEP 3 - We will do the rest. On refuse collection day your garbage will be collected, and your bag of recyclables taken to a recycling centre where the contents will be sorted and baled.
WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED:
Paper: Newspapers and magazines, Cardboard. White paper, Mixed paper
Plastic: All plastic (cooldrink/milk bottles, clean plastic shopping bags, plastic containers like household cleaning agents must be cleaned, clean wrapping and packing plastic).
Metal: Aliminium (food containers, cooldrink cans etc.), Steel, Copper
Glass: Tinted glass, Transparent glass
Organic: Left-over food, Peels etc. should not go into your clear recycle bag but can be kept and taken to pig farmers or used as compost.
THESE ITEMS ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR RECYCLING:
- Any wet, smelly soiled material
- Chemically treated paper (old faxes and heat sensitive items)
- Used paper towels and serviettes, wax paper, ply- or plastic-coated glossy paper, milk/juice cartons
- Rubber bands
- Metal paper fasteners
- Tinfoil and cling wrap plastic
- Polystyrene
- Nylon
- Cellophane
- Safety glass
- Laminated glass
- Light bulbs and neon tubes
- Crockery, pottery, plates, cups etc.
Composting:
The compost process that is used in Robertson is the controlled Microbial Composting (CMC) process. Materials we use in the compost process provide both carbon and nitrogen and include leaves, straw, plant pruning, lawn cuttings, saw dust and vegetable garden waste. Quality of the end product is guaranteed through simple monitoring methods. The USDA certified organic fertilizer is suitable for the use by the organic farmer.
