PRE-PAID ELECTRICITY DEDUCTIONS WHEN ACCOUNT IS IN ARREARS
When a municipal account of a pre-paid electricity user is in arrears, a portion of their pre-paid electricity purchase will automatically be deducted and paid towards settling a potion of their outstanding debt. As per the Credit control and debt collection policy.
IF YOUR ACCOUNT IS IN ARREARS, YOUR PRE-PAID ELECTRICITY WILL BE RESTRICTED IN THE FOLLOWING WAY.
IF NO PRIOR PAYMENT ARRANGEMENT HAS BEEN MADE, DEDUCTIONS WILL BE MADE AS FOLLOWS:
Duration of arrears on municipal account. | Percentage of pre-paid purchases automatically deducted towards crediting your arrears account. | Percentage of pre-paid purchases remaining towards electricity usage. |
1 Month in arrears (30 Days - 59 Days) |
- 90% deducted towards outstanding debt |
10% remain towards electricity units |
IF PRIOR PAYMENT ARRANGEMENT IS MADE, DEDUCTIONS WILL BE MADE AS FOLLOWS:

1 Month in arrears |
- 60% deducted towards outstanding debt |
40% remain towards electricity units |
2 Months in arrears |
- 80% deducted towards outstanding debt |
20% remain towards electricity units |
3 Months in arrears |
- 90% deducted towards outstanding debt |
10% remain towards electricity units |
Through this policy enhancement the municipality is providing assistance to residents to make special arrangements for outstanding accounts and to avoid getting your electricity blocked when an account is in arrears. We are inviting consumers to contact us for a payment arrangement to prevent the limitation of services.
Should a consumer however not want this auxiliary service to apply to them, they can contact the Credit Control office and indicate that they would rather prefer their account gets blocked for electricity, should it be in arrears.
