The current state of water in robertson

Robertson receives its bulk water from three sources, namely from the 1 Langeberg Mountains (the Dassieshoek and Koos Kok Dams), from the Robertson 2(Brandvlei) Irrigation Canal and from the 3 Hoops River Irrigation Scheme. The water from the mountains and a portion of the water from the Hoops River and the Irrigation Canal are used for the potable water requirements of the town and the other water sources for garden irrigation or "leiwater" purposes. (Gumgrove dam (from canal) and Koos Kok dam) As a result of the lower than average rainfall figures during the rainy season, the dam levels are now very low. Currently the water level at the Dassieshoek Dam is 23% and Kooskok Dam 52%. Compared to last year this time the dam levels for Dassieshoek and Kooskok was 100%. It is important to note that in terms of an agreement, the Willemnelsriver Water Users Association is entitled to of 165 000 m3 of water, which must be available early in January 2023. Because Dassieshoek dam is approximately 23% full, we have no other option but to pump water from the Gumgrove irrigation dam for purification purposes. The Municipality will be forced to reduce its supply of water from the Dassieshoek dam to ensure compliance with this agreement. This will place additional pressure on the water sources. The Gumgrove dam is fed from the irrigation canal. Due to reducing flow from Dassieshoek dam, more water from the Gumgrove dam is used for purification and this water is also pumped to the water purification works. The dam level must therefor be raised before more water can be pumped to water purification works. If “leiwater” is supplied, it will put more pressure on the water level of the Gumgrove dam. During load shedding, no water can be pumped from the canal (3 pumps). The level of the Gumgrove Dam is now around 60% and another two weeks will be needed to get the level to acceptable level. Residents are urged to use water EXTREMELY sparingly to get reservoirs to acceptable levels.
