THE ZOLANI COMMUNITY GRATEFULLY WELCOMES HIGH MAST LIGHT

A new high-mast lighting project to the value of R684 304 has been initiated in the Nkandla area of Zolani, Ashton. The Western Cape Government provided grant funds, which were supplemented by municipal funds, to launch this critical project aimed at improving community safety.

Construction began in August 2024 and the lights were turned on automatically for the first time on 25 November 2024. The installation was done by VE Reticulation, who used a crane truck to install the 30m high mast, which now provides light to a 150m radius around the mast.

After speaking with a few Nkandla residents, most of whom live in informal houses without any power or lighting, they expressed their happiness and appreciation for the light installation, adding that, despite the long wait, the area has improved, and they now feel a lot safer. They have already noticed a decline in crime in the immediate area and hope that incidences of rape will also decline.

Because of the increased visibility at night, they can now walk freely and confidently in the area without fear of being mugged. Residents expressed their need for more such installations to be constructed so that the citizens of Nkandla can feel safe.

The community are urged to help the initiative by looking after the infrastructure.
