VOTER CAN NOTIFY THE IEC TO CHANGE VOTING STATION BEFORE 17 MAY 2024

Voters in the Western Cape have heeded the call to make use of the opportunity to apply for Special Votes for the National and Provincial Elections 2024 (NPE2024). Nationally, 1.6 million Special Votes were recorded and the process is now closed.

For Special Vote applications, the IEC in the Western Cape received:

• 48 998 Home Visits
• 84 684 Voting Station Visits

Voters who received either a sms or email (or both) will be allowed to cast their special vote on 27 and 28 May 2024.

Provincial Electoral Officer, Michael Hendrickse reiterates it is important that all eligible South Africans know which voting stations they are registered at.

To check at which voting station you are registered at, you can check as follows:

• SMS your ID number to 32810;
• Check online at elections.org.za;
• Visit your local IEC office during office hours;
• Or call the IEC’s contact centre on 012 622 5700.

Please be reminded that voters can still apply for a Section 24A Notification in terms of the Electoral Act which allows the voter to notify the IEC that they want to vote on 29 May at a voting station other than where they are registered. Submissions of Section 24A Notifications are open until 17 May 2024.

In the past, during National and Provincial Elections, you could arrive on Election Day at a different voting station to vote there. Now, you need to first notify the IEC in advance of your intention to do so. Voters who arrive at a voting station where they not registered will now be turned away if they have not notified the IEC by the 17^th of May.

It is important also to remember, that in terms of Section 24A:

• If you intend casting a vote at a voting station where you are not registered and that different voting station is still within the province - you will receive all three ballots (National, Regional and Provincial)
• If you intend casting your vote at a voting station outside the province where you are registered, you will only receive the National ballot.
• You will need to ensure that the notification is correctly and completely filled in, as failure to do so will render your notification invalid.
• Thus, you must indicate the name and address of the voting station where you want to vote – you cannot simply refer to a suburb or town. The list of addresses of voting stations and voting district numbers can be accessed at : https://maps.elections.org.za/vsfinder/
• The Presiding Officer of that different voting station where you intend to vote, will have a list of all the voters who have successfully notified the IEC that they are voting there.

You can notify the IEC by:

• Visiting  elections.org.za and using the online Section 24A Notifications portal;
• Visiting your local IEC office in person, weekdays during business hours, and complete and submit the notification form.
