WEATHER ADVISORY WARNING: COLD, WINDY AND WET CONDITIONS ON 12-13 MAY

A well-defined cold front with a potent upper air support is expected to make landfall on Thursday, dropping the day time temperatures significantly from Friday into Saturday. Maximum temperatures may be below 10°C in places over the southern high-lying areas of the Namakwa region (N.Cape) and over the interior of the Western Cape. General windy conditions will accompany the cold and wet conditions. There is a very low likelihood light dusting of snowfall possible over the south-western mountains of the Western Cape as well as the southern high ground of Northern Cape on Friday afternoon into Saturday morning.

Impact: The combination of very cold, wet and windy conditions may result in the loss of vulnerable livestock and crops. The occurrence of loadshedding may result to more people being vulnerable, since their bodies might not retain their heat especially the weak and frail. Along with additional fires created for warmth and the strong winds across the province; this may result in fire hazard and thick smog particularly in informal settlements.

Instruction: The public and small stock farmers should be advised that loss of vulnerable livestock and crops can be expected due to the combination of very cold, windy and wet conditions. The weak and frail may also be vulnerable, since their bodies won't be able to retain their heat as easily.
