IMPACT BASED WARNING: LEVEL 2 SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS 21 OCTOBER 2023

Discussion: A cut-off low pressure system is expected to produce showers and thundershowers over the central and eastern parts of the Western Cape and southern Namakwa on Saturday. Some of these thunderstorms may become severe; resulting in rapid downpours, strong downdrafts as well as large amounts of small hail. Rainfall accumulation of 20-30 mm can be expected over most parts. However, reaching up to 50 mm in places over the Cape Winelands and western parts of the Garden Route (mainly morning) and Central Karoo (mainly from the afternoon).

Impact: Quick downpours, excessive lightning and possible large amounts of small hail could lead to localised flash flooding of susceptible roads, low lying areas and bridges, as well as localised structural damage especially in informal areas. Possible localised loss of livestock, crops and agricultural production may also occur.

Instruction: If possible stay indoors away from metal objects. Do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects. Do not go fishing or play golf as both the golf clubs and fishing rods are good conductors of electricity. Be aware that any combination of hail, strong winds and/or heavy downpours can accompany the storms.
